Our Mission
To provide a rewarding, professional forum in the construction industry, to promote education, networking, resourcing and community service.
About Us
CSI is a national association of more than 13,000 volunteers, including specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, facility owners, product representatives, manufacturers and many other construction disciplines who are experts in building and construction.

With 140+ Chapters across the country, CSI works with organizations in the U.S. and around the globe to develop building standards at all levels of Government.  The Sacramento Chapter has been in operation for over fifty years, and has been influential in State and local government.  CSI strives to be a community focused body of members, reaching out to students by providing mentoring and scholarships to students in need.

CSI is renown in the industry for its rigorous certification programs. They are dedicated to improving the communication of construction information through networking, continuous education and certification of professionals to improve the project delivery processes.

Sacramento Chapter History

FIRST MEETING:
An Organizational meeting was held in October 1953 to form a CSI Chapter to be known as “The Pacific Coast Chapter”.  The initial group consisted of 13 who became Charter Members.

CHARTER:
The Charter was issued on September 20, 1954, under the name of “The Northern California Chapter”; which became CSI’s 6th Chapter; proceeded only by Chapters in New York, District of Columbia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

NAME CHANGE:
In August 1959, the Chapter changed its name to “The Sacramento Chapter” to more accurately define its location.  CSI was growing and several other chapters were being formed in California.  The Sacramento Chapter grew steadily over the yeas, reaching 100 members in 1966 and nearly 150 members currently.

CHAPTER CONTRIBUTIONS
Since its formation, the Sacramento Chapter has actively contributed to CSI’s advancements in the construction industry.  Charter member Rolf T. Retz was advanced to Fellow, and later became an Honorary Member, CSI’s highest honor, for his pioneering services in the development of the 16 Division Format.  Our 5th Chapter President and later Institute Director, William Vickers, FCSI, also was a member of the Format Committee, and was honored for his efforts in developing the MasterFormat.

There are many other Chapter members who have contributed greatly, and are still contributing; as evidenced by the number of fellows and other honored members of the Chapter.

Another important factor in the success of the Sacramento Chapter was, and still is… WOMEN! Two groups, Women in Construction and wives of CSI members, volunteered their time and efforts to provide valuable assistance at Chapter functions, including meetings, Supplier’s Show, Christmas Party, and golf tournaments.  Several of the Women in Construction joined the Chapter and have served well.  For example, Norma Chapek became our first woman President.  Our wives encouraged attendance and participation of members.

CHAPTER PUBLICATIONS
The Column” has been the Chapter’s official newsletter since 1956.  We have been fortunate to have some fine Editors through the years, to keep us posted for meetings, events and news.  Other publications include ”The Chapter Roster”, which is due for reissue soon.

Years ago, we had another publication, a history “Digest”.  The first 2 editions, initiated by William Vickers, FCSI, were issued in 1966 and 1968.  This 50th Anniversary Publication fills some of the gaps in our history record between 1968 and 2004.  In addition, with the inclusion of the Chapter Bylaws, Committee Descriptions, Honor and Award records and chapter history, it will serve as a useful reference and basis for future periodic updates.
